Gregory G. Mullen served as the Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police at Clemson University from June 2018 to October 1, 2024. Prior to joining Clemson University, he served as the Chief of Police of the Charleston Police Department from October 2006 until August 1, 2017.
Chief Mullen began his law enforcement career in 1982 as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. In 1985, he joined the Virginia Beach Police Department, rising through the ranks to Deputy Chief of Police.
Chief Mullen is an experienced leader with a proven record of community involvement, cultivating relationships and using teams to create opportunities and solve problems. He has established strong community relationships in Clemson and while in Charleston with the goal of strengthening relationships between citizens and their police departments. Chief Mullen leads by example with a strong commitment to lifelong learning, employee growth and development and accountability.
During his career, Mullen has led numerous critical incidents including Clemson’s emergency operations COVID-19 response, the simultaneous trials of Dylann Roof and Michael Slager (2016), Emanuel AME Church shooting (2015), South Carolina’s historic flood event that impacted Charleston (2015) and the Sofa Super Store Fire, where nine firefighters died (2007).
